Fear of Dentists – Dentophobia:
What is Dentophobia?*
Experiencing a fear of dentists is so common that according to the British Dental Association, as many as 12% of all adults suffer from it, and up to a quarter of us will experience some sort of anxiety before a visit.
This may well be a significant factor in the findings of a recent survey – that as many as half of all adults in the UK have not been to the dentist in the past two years!
When he heard this, Professor Nigel Hunt, dean of the faculty of dental surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, was understandably greatly concerned; and, emphasising the seriousness 0f this, said: “Visiting the dentist regularly is crucial in providing rapid diagnosis and treatment to prevent both children and adults from being hospitalised due to tooth decay“.
Fortunately, it is possible to get help with fear of dentists quickly with Hypnowellness.
How Do You Treat a Fear of Dentists?*
Hypnotherapy in this instance is taught as “self hypnosis”; so that you, the client, can gain greater control over any feelings of fear and anxiety and learn to create a state of “inner calm” for yourself.
CBT is introduced alongside this to enable any unhelpful thinking to be challenged. “Unhelpful thinking” is simply what we do when we take memories of past bad experiences to predict that things will always be repeated in the future. It is when we become free from these thoughts and beliefs that we immediately experience a reduction in anxiety.
