What is anxiety, and how might Anxiety Hypnotherapy help?
It’s perfectly natural to worry from time to time, but when worry becomes overwhelming and you begin to feel a constant agitation that won’t go away, it could be time to consider anxiety hypnotherapy as your choice of treatment.
Anxiety can be defined as ‘a response to a perceived threat’. Without this response, we could not survive. All of us need to be able to react to stressful events and emergencies with an immediate surge in energy to enable us to deal with the situation we find ourselves in. This reaction has been called the ‘fight or flight response’.
When a situation occurs that our minds perceive as dangerous, a whole host of complex chemical changes occur in our brains and our bodies. We may experience a surge of energy as adrenaline and other stress hormones are released, often enabling feats of seemingly superhuman strength in moments of crisis. This is how are bodies are designed to react, and the subconscious ‘switches’ that fire up this response are vital for normal functioning. Problems occur however, when these switches are not functioning correctly, or when they do not switch off fully when the situation is no longer threatening.
The conscious mind may perceive a situation as only mildly threatening, but the subconscious may over react and immediately bring the body to a state of full alert. This pattern of behaviour and reaction, once established, often tends to worsen over time, leaving the sufferer exhausted and increasingly unable to cope. Their ‘anxiety threshold’ – the point at which the fight or flight response is normally triggered – becomes much lower, and they are in this heightened and very unpleasant state for prolonged periods. This can impact upon every other area of life, and if untreated can lead to depression and many physical ailments as the body finds much of its valuable resources burned up.
Anxiety disorders are one of the most common problems seen by both Physicians and Therapists. Unresolved anxiety can produce very unpleasant symptoms from insomnia to full-blown panic attacks; or perhaps just a constant feeling of never-ending “worrying”.
